Understanding Hair Plugs
The use of hair plugs is one of the most widely utilized methods when dealing with hair loss.
This technique involves the removal of hair from an area that is unaffected by the hair loss, so that it can
be used to create a fresh growth of hair on a balding area. This method is commonly referred to as the "hair
plug" method of hair replacement.
Modern Improvements in Hair Plug Techniques
Although hair plugs have been used for decades, early results were not that encouraging. This
is because the techniques that were available at that time were limited to removing and then transplanting
larger chunks of skin and hair. Today's modern microsurgery techniques have improved the success of using
hair plug. The results are often very natural looking and can successfully replace a person's balding hair
with their own hair, taken from another area of their head. Another term commonly used to describe hair plugs
is hair transplants or hair implants. Using modern techniques, surgeons use an extraction method to remove
individual hairs along with their follicular support system. These hairs are then inserted into hair
follicles in the balding area. This process is much less painful and less involved than older hair plug
methods. Using modern techniques, there is generally some scalp irritation but there is no longer the need
for bandaging, and the procedure can be performed on an outpatient basis.
How Hair Loss Occurs
The most common area for a man to lose hair is at the hairline, which is generally referred to
as male pattern baldness. This condition is usually genetic in nature, and is the result of a substance in
the body, called DHT, which actually attacks and kills the hair follicles. Once the hair falls out, the hair
follicle is dormant and the hair does not grow again.
Advantages of Hair Plugs over Other Hair Restoration Methods
Hair transplants are a very effective method of dealing with a hair loss problem. Because a
person's own healthy hair is used, the results are very natural looking and the transplanted hair blends
right in with the rest of the person's hair. It can be a great method for reconstructing a receding hair
line, because this method of hair restoration will allow the hair to be combed in the same manner as it was
previously, without there being an obvious sign that hair restoration has taken place. When hair is lost in
the hairline area, the chances of getting it to grow back on its own is not good. So, replacing the hair that
has fallen out with healthy hair from another area of the head is often the best way of restoring this hair.
Because the hair that is used during the transplant comes from an area of the head that is not prone to hair
loss, the new hair will not be affected by the same issues that caused the baldness to occur in the first
place. Although hair transplant methods are more expensive than most other hair restoration methods, most men
feel that the good results that can be obtained are worth the price.
