Hair Restoration For Women
Even though hair loss affects both men and women and a large percentage of those affected by alopecia and
hair-thinning are women, it is men that are more likely to seek medical attention for the same. This may be in part
due to the perception that surgical hair transplantation is more successful in the case of men, and partly due to
inadequate awareness of the benefits of surgical hair restoration for women.
Many women can turn out to be excellent candidates for a hair-transplant procedure. However, close attention will
need to be paid to the pattern of hair loss for women, as it can greatly differ from that of men. In addition, in
the case of women, hair loss is more likely to be the result of some sort of weakness, hormonal imbalance or
underlying illness, and regular and thorough medical check-ups are required to rule out these possibilities before
hair-transplantation may be carried out.
Here are the various options that may be considered in order to reduce and check hair loss:
• Though hair loss is considered a genetic problem, there are high chances that your hairstylist and family
doctor may be able to advise you effectively. Your doctor can recommend a healthier diet, rule out the possibility
of underlying illnesses, stress, etc and often also basic medicines or supplements to check hair loss. A good
hairstylist too may prove to be the least expensive option and may recommend a good hair-care routine, products to
suit your hair type and a haircut that reduces the appearance of thinning hair, as also prevents too much damage to
hair.
• In the case that a doctor of hairstylist is unable to help, you can go in for widely available medications
that help in hair regrowth. Topical minoxidil, generally marketed as Rogaine is the first FDA approved drug
for regrowing hair. This is an application drug, to be applied to the scalp twice daily. This is perceived to work
best in cases where hair loss has just begun, and there are many doubts raised about the effectiveness of the drug
in actual regeneration of hair. It is however, largely understood to be useful in checking hair loss.
• Another drug that is available and FDA approved is finasteride, marketed as Propecia. This is known to work
best for male pattern baldness and is known to strengthen and thicken each hair strand in addition to promoting
actual hair regeneration.
• In extreme cases, a combination of Propecia, Rogaine, and hair transplantion is used to optimize hair
restoration. Hair transplantation uses a needle to remove hair from densely covered areas of the head to implant
these into the areas that are balding. This can be a slow and painful procedure with limited success and will only
be recommended in case where all other possibilities are ruled out.
• Even in extreme cases, there’s always the option of wearing a hairpiece, if surgery doesn’t seem too
appealing. Customized hairpieces can look quite natural though you’ll need to keep these clean, colored and
well-fitting.
You should remember that just as with men, hair restoration for women too is a tricky procedure, with no
guarantees. Do consult a doctor about the risks and requirements of hair-restoration before going in for any
treatment.
